Enterprise Achitecture(EA) has been ever evolving discipline.
The evolution was almost always tied to the then prevelent management concepts and technology trends.
The correllation of management ideas, technologies and enterprise architecture is not new.
However understanding these topics in the current context and applying the resultant ideas to emerging enterprise-wide challenges can be a valuable exercise.
Early days of Automation were inspired by Scientic Management concepts of F.W. Taylor.
They were focussed on the following:
1. Clear Delienation fo Responsibility
2. Separation of planning from operations
3. Incentive schemes for workers
4. Management by execption
5. Task Specialization
These concepts took over 60 years(F.W.Taylor -- 1881) to be fully incoporated in automated systems.
Eary Mainframe machines were purpose built -- Accounting or Scientific/Engineering Applications.
There was clear separation of planning systems and operational systems. the Feedback loop
of applying results from planning to operation was not automated.
Enterprise Architechure was based on the foundation of task specialization and operational efficiency with a task.
Advances in Electrical engineering, Mainframes and Wincester Disks were prime movers on the technology front. They rapidly repaced more mechanical devices in major industries both on accounting and manufacturing front.
